Charlottesville, VA/Guthrie Family

We drove down to Bumpass, VA to visit John & Bev last Wednesday and returned home today. The reason for the timing of the trip was the Guthrie Family concert in Charlottesville on Saturday night.

The Paramount Theatre before the concert:

Arlo:

Sara Lee Guthrie (Arlo's youngest) and husband Johnny Irion:

and their elder daughter Olivia:

and their younger daughter Sophia:

Finally, CL, Bev and John after the concert.

Check back in a few days -- I'll try to post images of more Guthries.

St. Joseph/Emmanuel Basketball

Thursday evening we went down to West Hartford, CT to Saint Joseph College to watch their basketball game with Emmanuel College.
The Emmanuel team before the game:
Two shots of CL's former student Tiaunna, who had much more playing time than the last game we went to. We enjoyed watching Emmanuel win and T score 15 points.

After working in Hartford for the past 37 years, I didn't know where the campus was and had never seen it, so on the way home I stopped to take this shot of what appeared to be the administration building.

Friday Dinner

Amanda's parents joined us for dinner last night, so Maggie had all four of her grandparents admiring her at once.

Wesleyan University

Wednesday evening we drove down to Middletown, CT to Wesleyan University, where the Emmanuel College women's basketball team was playing.
One of CL's all-time favorite students is a freshman on the Emmanuel College team. She didn't get much playing time, but at least we got to say hello after the game.
Emmanuel won, by the way.

My first video:

Visiting Maggie

We're in Cambridge this week doing a little babysitting and are amazed at how fast Maggie is developing.

Boar's Head Festival

The 27th annual Boar's Head Festival was held at Trinity UMC last weekend (Jan 8 - 10). It's taken me the past week to go through the 2500 pictures I shot and winnow them down to a few hundred for showing. Very briefly, it's a recreation of a medieval Epiphany celebration.

It includes Monks,

Beefeaters,

Woodsmen,

the Boar's Head itself,

Gargoyles,

the Lord and Lady of the castle,

Bearers of food and animals (here CL is the poultry bearer),

Dancers,

more Monks,

more Woodsmen (bearing the yule log),

Camels (three, one for each Wise Man),

and the Three Wise Men.

Pittsburgh Addendum

One of the reasons were were in Pittsburgh last weekend was to celebrate an early Christmas with Jesse and Aurora. This is one of Jesse's gifts from CL - an orange corduroy apron. (See his blog if you don't know its significance.)

Handmade Arcade

This morning we got up bright and early and faced the cold
to visit Handmade Arcade,
an armory full of artists and crafters (and about a million shoppers).

A pair of churches we walked by.

Pittsburgh

On Thursday we drove to Pittsburgh. It was a relatively uneventful trip; we made it in 7 3/4 hours. The only problem was the road salt on a section of US22 east of Piittsburgh; there were snow flurries, and the road crews dumped more salt than the total snowfall.

Yesterday we went to the Strip District, as is usual for our Pittsburgh visits. The following are just a sample of the variety of stores there.
(Chinese food)

(spices)

(Steelers gear)

(cheese)

(dried fish)

(bulk olive oil)

(mini donuts)

(coffee)

Then back at Jesse and Aurora's, they had a Greenfield Ave. Christmas Parade watching party.
