On Saturday afternoon we visited the National Civil Rights Museum. No pictures were allowed inside, but I took a few exterior shots. The museum is housed in the Lorraine Motel/Hotel buildings plus additional space across the street. The Lorraine is where Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968.
If we had visited nothing else on this entire trip, the afternoon at this museum would have made the entire trip worthwhile. The museum visit starts with a 1/2 hour film on the assassination. The museum starts with slavery and works forward to the 1970's. CL says the information there is worth at least a 3 credit semester course. Emotionally, it's draining. Despite the fact that we both lived through the Civil Rights Movement, we were young and isolated enough that much of the historic impact was lost on us. This exhibit certainly helped us put it in perspective and increased our understanding of this important part of our country's history. We highly recommend that everyone visit it.
Jesse and I found the National Civil Rights Museum equally interesting when we visited it 8 (?) years ago. There is definitely enough information packed into that building for an entire college course, or more!
